Returning to The Witcher 3 can mean two different projects: recovering an old playthrough or starting again with a newer version of the game. Decide which you want before changing installations or purchasing another edition. A familiar title in your library is a useful starting point, but it does not tell you which content you own or which save you last used.

Check the current PS5 release

At the October 2026 check, the official PlayStation page presents The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. It describes a free update for existing PS5 owners, released on September 29, 2026, replacing the previous PS5 version. Do not read that as a promise that the same update applies to a PS4 installation.

The listed changes include visual and animation improvements, adjustments to movement and combat, and interface features. For a returning player, the useful response is to inspect the current menus and tutorials. An old settings screenshot or build guide may describe a previous version even when its title looks familiar.

Protect the save before experimenting

Before reinstalling, switching versions, or moving consoles, note the account, platform label, and latest recognizable checkpoint. Keep the original save available until you have confirmed the intended progress in the version you will use. Our PS5 save-backup guide explains why a downloaded game and its saved progress require separate checks.

If the loaded character appears unfamiliar, stop and verify the save selection. Do not overwrite several slots simply to see whether the right progress appears. A location, quest name, or screenshot of the load screen can help distinguish an older experiment from the journey you meant to continue.

Continue or start fresh?

Continue when you remember the broad story and still care about the choices already made. Spend an initial session reviewing the journal, equipment, and controls before pursuing a demanding objective. You do not need to remember every conversation to resume a coherent playthrough.

Start again when recovering the old context feels more like administration than entertainment, or when you actively want to make different decisions. That is a preference, not a requirement imposed by a new presentation. Keep the previous progress until you are confident that the fresh run is the one you want.

Separate an update from expansion ownership

The official page lists expansion content separately, including Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Read the exact contents of your owned edition and any new package you are considering. A free technical update should not be interpreted as a universal entitlement to every separately listed story release.

For an existing owner, check the library and installed add-ons before paying for overlapping content. For a first purchase, compare packages by the stories they contain, then decide how much you genuinely want to begin with. If you mix a disc and digital add-ons, consult our region-compatibility guide.

Use a small re-entry routine

  1. Confirm the correct PS5 version and available updates.
  2. Open the intended save and read the current quest description.
  3. Review equipment and controls in a manageable location.
  4. Choose one nearby objective instead of rebuilding the entire character immediately.
  5. Save after a clear checkpoint and note the next intention.

Keep your display configuration consistent while relearning the game. If a visual option changes, compare it in the same scene using our PS5 display guide. Returning should help you enjoy Geralt's journey again, rather than create an endless search for settings that you have never evaluated in play.
