Cyberpunk 2077 becomes easier to buy when you separate three questions: which console version you will run, whether you want Phantom Liberty, and whether you already own part of the package. The presence of the same title on PS4 and PS5 can hide important differences. Start with the version you intend to install, rather than a discount percentage or an edition's artwork.

Make sure you are choosing the PS5 version

The official PlayStation page states that the PS4 version's last update arrived in November 2022 and that Phantom Liberty is available for PS5. A PS4 installation running on a PS5 is therefore not a substitute for selecting the native PS5 game when you want the newer content.

Check the version label in your library before a large download. If you are upgrading an existing purchase, read the entitlement shown for your account and format. A disc-based entitlement still needs compatible hardware and the required disc. Do not buy an expansion first and assume it supplies a missing base-game license.

Base game, expansion, and Ultimate Edition

The base game follows V in Night City. Phantom Liberty adds a spy-thriller story associated with Dogtown, while Ultimate Edition packages the base game and that expansion together. These are useful content distinctions; they do not require you to decide in advance how many hours you will spend exploring.

For a first purchase, compare the combined package with the cost of buying its parts. For an existing owner, compare the expansion alone with any upgrade offer actually available to that account. Check the regional listing carefully when mixing a European disc with a US account: our DLC region guide explains why the base game's region matters.

Begin with the game you want to understand

For a first playthrough, I recommend starting with the base game's opening and following its introduction before pursuing extra content. That gives you time to understand V, the interface, and the kind of decisions you enjoy making. An external chronology can be interesting later, but it can also reveal story connections before they have meaning.

Treat related television or animated stories as optional interests, rather than homework you must complete before pressing New Game. If you enjoy discovering a setting through play, allow the game to establish its own context. Search for a specific answer only when a mechanic or purchase question is genuinely blocking you.

Choose a play style before optimizing a build

During the opening hours, observe what you naturally attempt. Do you prefer entering carefully, using technology, or solving an encounter through direct combat? Write down that preference before looking up a detailed build. A guide designed for an entirely different approach can make your equipment choices feel less coherent.

Change one part of your setup at a time and compare it in a familiar situation. Avoid spending every session rearranging settings in pursuit of an ideal configuration you have not defined. A useful build is one whose tools you remember to use under pressure.

Returning with an older save

Preserve the old save before making account, console, or installation changes. Confirm which game version created it and follow the current in-game import or synchronization instructions. Our PS5 save guide covers the difference between game files and saved progress; downloading the game again does not itself prove your latest progress is protected.

When you load in, review your current objective, controls, and equipment somewhere manageable. A short orientation session is often more productive than immediately continuing the hardest mission you remember. Once the setup is comfortable, decide whether to continue that character or begin a fresh story.
