The useful question is which format fits the way you buy, revisit, and share games. A disc drive makes sense when you already have a physical library you want to keep using. Digital purchases can be more convenient when you switch games frequently and prefer managing everything through one account.

Neither choice removes the need to check the exact edition. A box, a disc, a download code, and a bundle containing extra content are different products. Read what is supplied before comparing prices.

For example, Rockstar says the boxed GTA VI release contains a download code and no disc. See its edition details.

What Sony's January 2028 change means

As checked on October 26, 2026, Sony has announced that new PlayStation releases from January 2028 will be sold in digital formats through PlayStation Store and retailers. The announcement says the change does not affect games released on disc before that date. Sony's July 2026 announcement and current PS5 product page confirm this distinction.

For a purchase today, evaluate a drive against the discs you own and the existing releases you intend to buy. Do not assume that every future game will offer a physical disc, or that this announcement makes your current discs unusable.

Check the console before buying a disc

A PS5 with a disc drive can also play digital purchases. A console without a drive needs compatible drive hardware to use supported discs; the name “Digital Edition” alone does not establish whether it can accept one.

Sony's drive setup guide names the CFI-2000/7000 model groups and requires an internet connection for initial pairing. The current US PS5 listing additionally identifies CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition models. Compare your complete model number with the current product listing for your country. The original Digital Edition is not covered by these detachable-drive groups.

If you are buying used hardware, ask for the model number rather than relying on a photograph or a seller's description of “the new PS5.” Include any separately purchased drive in your total budget.

Discs do not eliminate installation

Sony states that an installed PS5 game's performance is identical whether its installation came from disc or PlayStation Store. Both run from the console's game storage; buying a disc is not a way to avoid using that space. See the installation comparison in the official PS5 FAQ.

Separate three questions when connectivity matters: what is on the disc, what must be downloaded, and whether the game itself requires online services. Check the publisher's requirements for the specific release. A physical purchase alone is insufficient evidence that the full experience works offline.

For storage planning, use our M.2 SSD and USB guide. Compare the versions you actually intend to install rather than treating the size of the box or disc as a storage estimate.

Lending and household play work differently

A physical lending arrangement depends on handing over the required disc; plan around who needs it next. With digital purchases, Sony's Console Sharing and Offline Play allows other users of one enabled PS5 to access purchased, downloaded games and some subscription benefits, including offline access where the game supports it. The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time.

Choose a household arrangement that matches where people actually play. Do not treat giving somebody your account credentials as a substitute for understanding these settings. If a previously accessible game becomes locked, use the license troubleshooting guide before buying another copy.

Inspect used copies and regional editions

Voucher codes can be redeemed once, must match the account region, and cannot be transferred between accounts after redemption. Sony lists these limits in its voucher guide. Price a used “complete” edition according to the content you can actually receive, especially when bonuses came on a paper insert.

For US, UK, or imported European copies, verify the licensed edition before buying DLC. English cover text does not settle that question. Our DLC compatibility guide provides the checks; our PS4 migration guide covers older discs and upgrade entitlements.

A sensible mixed library is entirely possible: keep discs for the collection you value and use digital purchases where convenience matters more. Make each decision using the exact package, available hardware, and access conditions.
