Mafia: The Old Country can be a sensible entry point for someone discovering the series, but its earlier setting does not create a mandatory homework order. Decide whether you want to begin with the newest origin story or experience the earlier games through their modern releases. Then check which products are actually included in the package you are buying.
What kind of game is The Old Country?
The official PlayStation page places Enzo Favara's story in early-twentieth-century Sicily. It describes crime, close-range fighting, firearms, stealth, horses, and period cars. More importantly for expectations, 2K's own introduction presents a focused, linear narrative.
Do not buy it solely because screenshots resemble a large crime sandbox. A carefully directed story can be exactly what you want, but it offers a different reason to return from a game built primarily around unrestricted roaming. Think about whether you want the next authored chapter or an open-ended list of activities.
Two sensible starting routes
Start with The Old Country if Sicily, Enzo, and the origin-story premise are what attracted you. Let that game introduce its own characters and conflicts. You can explore other entries afterward without turning your first purchase into a commitment to several games.
Start with Mafia: Definitive Edition if you want to begin with the remake of the series' first story, then continue to Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition. That follows the trilogy's main narrative releases in order, using their updated editions.
Neither route requires a spoiler-heavy chronology chart. A setting's historical date is useful context, but it does not automatically tell you the best discovery order. Choose the opening that makes you want to play, then preserve the surprises in the stories you have not reached.
Check what Trilogy means
The Mafia: Trilogy package groups the three Definitive Edition releases. The Old Country is a separate game; do not assume the word Trilogy on an older product page silently expands to include a later release. Read the itemized contents and platform labels.
If you already own one or two entries, compare the cost of the missing games with the bundle offered to your account. Also distinguish a temporary subscription entitlement from a purchase. A familiar library tile does not establish permanent ownership of every item in a related collection.
Let the period change how you approach play
When beginning The Old Country, give the opening time to establish its pace and tools. Avoid importing expectations about weapon availability, vehicles, or mission structure from a different crime series. Learn the options the current encounter provides and the reason the story is sending you there.
For a first run, keep assistance focused on a problem you actually have. Looking up a control or a confusing objective is different from reading every future betrayal before meeting the characters. A narrow search can preserve the part of the experience that motivated the purchase.
A final check before buying
- Choose one entry or a clearly listed collection.
- Confirm the PS4 or PS5 platform label.
- Check which content your account already owns.
- Compare optional extras separately from the main story.
- Keep an existing save before changing installations or consoles.
If you are choosing between two large crime stories, our Red Dead Redemption 2 guide explains another important distinction: a campaign purchase versus a separate online product. Similar branding can conceal very different sessions.
