For two people who want a shared campaign, start by comparing Split Fiction and It Takes Two. For a group that may change size, consider Sackboy: A Big Adventure or Overcooked! All You Can Eat. All four offer local cooperative play on one PS5, but their structure and demands differ. A game advertised as multiplayer is not automatically a couch co-op game.

The player counts above describe people cooperating simultaneously. Some store pages show a broader “1–2 players” label for a two-person adventure; that does not mean its main campaign has a conventional solo mode. EA describes It Takes Two as co-op-only, while Split Fiction is designed around a pair. EA's It Takes Two overview and Split Fiction FAQ.

For a regular two-player partnership

Split Fiction

Its split-screen structure gives both players an active role across science-fiction and fantasy scenarios. Choose it when both people want to learn changing mechanics and coordinate their actions, rather than have one player act mainly as a helper. Before committing to a long campaign, use the available Friend's Pass demo to see how the pair handles the opening levels. EA says the demo supports local play. Demo and local-play details.

It Takes Two

This is another two-person commitment, centered on Cody and May and their fractured relationship. The sensible buying question is whether both players enjoy solving problems together, including moments when progress depends on the other person. It is less suitable as a purchase for a changing four-person group. The first chapter can be tried locally through Friend's Pass before one player obtains the full game. EA's trial explanation.

For a flexible group

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy accommodates one to four local players, making it a useful option when a household cannot promise the same partner for every session. Its cooperative platforming suits a group that wants to travel through levels together. Allow new players time to learn movement before rushing ahead: sharing a camera means one person's pace affects the rest. Player support and game description.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

Choose this when the group enjoys assigning jobs and improving a shared plan. Start with a simple agreement about who prepares ingredients, who cooks, and who delivers; change roles between attempts instead of everyone chasing the same task. The collection includes an assist mode with options such as more generous timers and level skipping. Those are useful tools for a mixed-experience group, not a failure to play correctly. Controllers, accounts, internet, and subscriptions

Plan one compatible controller per player and charge them before the session. Sony supports up to four paired controllers in simultaneous use. Controller pairing guide. On one console, you need access to the full game rather than a separate purchase for each couch participant. Complete installation and any updates beforehand, then use the game's local option instead of an online invitation menu.

EA explicitly states that Split Fiction's offline couch mode uses two controllers and needs neither an internet connection nor an EA account. Its online Friend's Pass mode has different account requirements. The other three store listings mark online play as optional. Their PS Plus requirement applies to online play, not the local modes discussed here. A game accessed through a subscription still depends on that entitlement. EA's requirement breakdown.

For digital purchases, Sony's Console Sharing and Offline Play setting determines access for other users and offline use on the designated PS5. Configure it on the purchasing account and test the game before relying on an offline evening. Guest and signed-in user choices can affect saved progress, so use persistent profiles where progress matters. Sony's sharing guidance. Check suitability as well as the number of players

Colorful presentation is not an age recommendation. For example, Split Fiction carries ESRB Teen in the US and PEGI 16 in PEGI markets. Read the content descriptors and check the exact regional edition for every game you choose. ESRB rating and PEGI confirmation.

Also check whether each player can read text at split-screen size, distinguish prompts, and use the required controls comfortably. Explore the game's options together and use the PS5 accessibility guide for console adjustments. A short trial with the actual group is more useful than assuming a popular game will suit everyone.
