DOOM: The Dark Ages gives returning players familiar enemies and a different set of decisions. The Shield Saw deserves particular attention because it is central to how the game frames offense and defense. Rather than importing every habit from another DOOM title, begin by learning which threats the new tools are meant to answer.

Understand the change in emphasis

The official PlayStation description presents The Dark Ages as a single-player prequel to DOOM and DOOM Eternal, with a heavier, more grounded combat style. The medieval setting includes a shield, firearms, and large-scale sequences. That does not mean every encounter should be approached by standing still; it means you should learn the game's own rhythm before judging it by another entry's movement.

For a first session, focus on recognizing the information shown during combat. Identify the enemy currently creating the most pressure and the tool introduced to address that problem. Avoid using every available action simply because a hectic scene makes you feel that constant input must be better.

Learn the Shield Saw as a practical tool

In id Software's gameplay explanation, the Shield Saw interacts differently with targets: it can disrupt enemies and respond to particular defenses or materials. The important lesson is to observe the result of a shield action instead of treating it as one generic attack.

When you meet a new enemy, look for the cue the tutorial or encounter emphasizes. Test the relevant response in a manageable exchange. If the result is unclear, repeat the same interaction rather than changing weapons and position simultaneously. A recognizable cause and effect makes later crowded fights easier to read.

Give each weapon a job

Choose equipment according to the immediate situation. Consider distance, target behavior, available ammunition, and whether another enemy will punish you for staying exposed. A favorite weapon can remain useful without becoming the answer to every encounter.

After a difficult fight, ask which tool stayed unused and why. Perhaps you forgot its role, could not reach its input comfortably, or did not recognize the situation where it would help. Practice that one action before adding another complicated sequence to your routine.

  • Identify the threat before selecting a response.
  • Keep enough space to understand the incoming attack.
  • Use the shield interaction the encounter is teaching.
  • Follow with a weapon choice that fits the resulting opening.

Adjust difficulty to the skill you are learning

The official game description includes customizable difficulty options. Read those settings individually instead of assuming a preset's name tells you everything about the challenge. If one part of the experience prevents learning, adjust that part deliberately and compare the result.

For example, if you cannot read the attack cue before the encounter ends, the first goal is to create room to recognize it. Once you can perform the response reliably, decide whether you want more pressure. A useful difficulty setting makes your mistakes understandable rather than merely frequent.

Keep the PS5 setup consistent

Check controller options and establish a comfortable display mode before a long session. Our PS5 picture guide explains how to evaluate supported options without confusing the television's refresh rate with the game's actual output.

For a purchase, compare the base game with the specific content listed in each premium package. Do not assume a skin bundle is a story expansion or that an announced future item is already available. Choose around the campaign and extras you want, then learn the combat through small, repeatable decisions.
